When law enforcement budgets are reduced, the first casualities of these reductions are educational programs that take officers away from the streets.
In response to these nationwide budget reductions, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms commissioned this presentation.
There are two aspects to this Interactive Education tool:
First - YOUTH
"Reality of Gang Involvement"
This section introduces adolescents to actual gang members and OG's (old gang members) who describe what being in a gang means, the consequences, and their reflections.
"Users" are introduced to current gang members in detention or jail who reveal their crimes and their sentence.
"Users" will meet adolescent peers who want to be gang members and hear their perspective of what they think a gang is all about. The Portland Police Gang Task Force will then apprise them of the real facts.
"Users" are tasked to take the "Is There a Future?" challenge, its function is to question what they think about gangs and lets the "users" know the facts and reality.
Second - ADULT
Parent and Community Education
Parents and community organizations are alerted to:
- Warning Signs
- A challenge to see how gang smart they are
- Families whose children were killed and what they didn't know or do
- Community leader immersed in gang prevention
- The methods gangs use to recruit new members
- Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms "great" anti-gang program
